Future Doctors...

Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatric residents at UC Davis benefit from cutting edge training both in the hospital and outside of it. Residents learn to see themselves as  beneficial resources to the communities in which they practice medicine, both personally and professionally, and are encouraged to explore their roles beyond the "white coat."

Using a three-pronged approach to teaching resident physicians about community and community health ensures that there is something for everyone. Residents learn through hands-on, interactive meetings, events and experiences right in their assigned communities; they are supplied reading materials and reflection tools to gain insights and knowledge about their experiences; and they are provided with didactic education where community members and respected professionals speak together about topics from Asset-Based Community Development to informing parents on how to choose quality childcare.  For more information to view some of these tools, please see our Resources page.

Finally, Residents work with their community partners to identify a health issue of interest; and use local community assets to plan, implement and evaluate a project that addresses the issue.  Read more about our Resident Community Projects.

...and Practicing Physicians

The goal of involving Community Physicians in the work of CPT is based on two ideas:

1. CPT is dedicated not only to training future doctors in community medicine and child advocacy, but practicing physicians as well

2. Practicing physicians can serve as terrific mentors for future doctors, especially in the area of working in the community and hands-on work with children and families.
